Photoluminescent Safety Signs: When You Need Glow in the Dark

Photoluminescent signs absorb light while the lights are on and glow in the dark once they go off, with no power or wiring needed. They are the simple way to keep escape routes visible in a power cut or smoke.

When to choose photoluminescent

  • Fire exit and escape route signs, especially in stairwells and corridors
  • Any area where the lighting could fail during an emergency
  • Buildings following BS 5499 guidance on escape route signing

How it compares

Standard vinyl or rigid signs are fine for everyday warning, prohibition and mandatory signs in lit areas. Photoluminescent costs a little more but earns its place on escape routes where visibility in the dark matters. For outdoor and low light areas, Class 1 reflective is the other option.

You can choose the photoluminescent finish on any sign here, including every fire exit sign and the whole fire safety range.

Shop the range: every sign is printed to order in the UK to BS EN ISO 7010, in six materials and seven sizes. Browse all signs or design your own.
