Safety Signs Explained: The Five Types and When to Use Them

Safety signs in the UK follow BS EN ISO 7010, the standard that fixes the shape, colour and symbol of every sign so they are understood anywhere, whatever language people speak. There are five main types. Knowing which is which makes it easy to choose the right sign.

1. Prohibition signs (red circle)

A red circle with a diagonal bar means do not do something, such as no smoking or no access. Place them at the point where the restriction applies. See all prohibition signs.

2. Warning signs (yellow triangle)

A yellow triangle warns of a hazard, from electricity to a slippery surface. Site them close to the risk and at eye level. See all warning signs.

3. Mandatory signs (blue circle)

A blue circle tells people what they must do, usually wear the right protection such as head protection. Put them at the entrance to the area where the rule applies. See all mandatory signs.

4. Safe condition signs (green square)

A green sign points the way to safety, first aid and escape routes, such as a fire exit or first aid point. Keep them visible all along the route. See all safe condition signs.

5. Fire equipment signs (red square)

A red square identifies fire fighting equipment such as a fire extinguisher or alarm call point. See all fire safety signs.
